Smith was drafted by the sacramento kings in 1987 and played six seasons in sacramento before moving to the houston rockets where he played most of his career.

Smith won two world championships with the houston rockets in 1994 and 1995, becoming a part of the elite group of players to have won back-to back championships on different teams. In 1998, Smith joined the united states men’s national basketball team for which he won a bronze medal at the olympic games.

After his playing career, Smith became a commentator and analyst for the NBA on TNT. Smith played 13 seasons in the NBA before retiring in 2002 after playing with the new jersey nets. He is currently a commentator for nba on TNT.
