Memoji are a step up from Animoji, as they allow you to create a custom, 3D-animated emoji that looks just like you (or anyone else you want).

Both Animoji and Memoji can be used in the Messages app on your iPhone, as well as in FaceTime and third-party apps like Snapchat. Here’s everything you need to know about using Animoji and Memoji on your iPhone.

How to use Animoji and Memoji

To use Animoji or Memoji, you need an iPhone that supports Face ID (iPhone X or later). Open the Messages app, then start a new conversation or tap on an existing one.

• Tap on the App Store icon next to the text field, then tap on the Animoji icon (it looks like a monkey). This will open the Animoji app.
• If you want to use Memoji, tap on the Memoji button at the bottom of the screen. If you’ve already created a Memoji, it will appear here. Otherwise, tap on the + icon to create a new one.
• To use an Animoji or Memoji, simply tap on it and then record your message. You can also tap on the red Record button to record a longer message (up to 30 seconds).
• When you’re done recording, tap on the Stop button. You can then preview your message and send it as usual.
• If you want to use Animoji or Memoji in a FaceTime call, open the FaceTime app and start a new call. Tap on the Effects button (it looks like a star), then select Animoji or Memoji.
• You can also use Animoji and Memoji in third-party apps like Snapchat. To do this, open the app and look for an option to use your camera. Tap on the Effects button (it may be located in a different place), then select Animoji or Memoji.

Not all apps support Animoji and Memoji, but more and more are adding support all the time.

How to create a Memoji

Creating a Memoji is easy, and it’s a lot of fun. To get started, open the Messages app and tap on the App Store icon next to the text field.

• Tap on the Animoji icon (it looks like a monkey), then tap on the Memoji button at the bottom of the screen. If you’ve already created a Memoji, it will appear here. Otherwise, tap on the + icon to create a new one.
• You’ll be able to customize your Memoji by choosing from a variety of skin tones, hairstyles, headwear, and glasses. You can also add facial features like freckles and piercings.

Once you’re happy with your Memoji, tap on the Done button. Your Memoji will now be saved and will appear in the Memoji app whenever you want to use it.

How to edit a Memoji

You can edit your Memoji at any time by going to the Settings app. Tap on General, then tap on Keyboard.

• Tap on Keyboards, then tap on Add New Keyboard. Scroll down and select Animoji.
• Tap on the Animoji icon (it looks like a monkey), then tap on the Memoji button at the bottom of the screen. If you’ve already created a Memoji, it will appear here. Otherwise, tap on the + icon to create a new one.
• You’ll be able to edit your Memoji by choosing from a variety of skin tones, hairstyles, headwear, and glasses. You can also add facial features like freckles and piercings.

Once you’re happy with your Memoji, tap on the Done button. Your Memoji will now be saved and will appear in the Memoji app whenever you want to use it.
